my venus

Poem

2022-2023 Winter

the first pinprick in my twilight sky

winking into view

my venus

emerges out of ocean blue

i watch her through my telescope

crossing the frigid vacuum to

my venus

she tells me i am her mars                she told him that too

outside of her sphere yet i am

hurtling towards her                scientific anomaly        a victim of her gravity

my venus

smiles and the universe draws me in

in my eyes she is a golden beauty

though i cannot see her soul from the ground

my venus

she hides her burning sulfuric heart behind gently swirling clouds

modern icarus        i go to her

though she is not the sun

my venus

i am too close but i will

        let my wings

                melt

                .
